Ensuring Food Security

The Food Bank could solve world hunger by having decentralized food collection centers where people would deposit their excess edible food.

Food Bank is received excess edible food items from different resources. If there is not a Food Bank all these food items are discarded as food waste.

At the same time, one-third of food produced for human consumption is wasted. These food waste causes to divide the world into the “haves” and “have nots”.

While Food Banks have long been a safety net for those in short term crisis, they are increasingly being used by those experiencing long term deprivation, with many Food Bank recipients using Food Banks as frequently as they are able, yet many remain food insecure.

While Food Banks may not be able to resolve all client needs, they do have a role to play in reducing the impact of food insecurity.

As a country, this situation is same for Sri Lanka also. In global hunger index, Sri Lanka is the 64th among 107 countries, according to the 2016 reports, children under age 5 years, 15% and 17& were suffering from wasting and stunning respectively n Sri Lanka.

Therefore, implementation of the Food Bank can play a major role in meeting the food need of the vulnerable populations.
